“The 2018 Downstream comes from a collaboration between two great winemakers, Justin Smith in Paso Robles and Philippe Cambie in the Southern Rhône. I’ve loved every vintage of this cuvée, and the 2018 is no exception.“ 98 JD

2018 Downstream

Broad, fleshy and supple, offering densely packed boysenberry, cassis, fruitcake, floral pastille and cola flavors supported by a core of juicy acidity. The blue fruit and floral notes carry strongly through an extremely long, youthfully tannic finish that shows superb clarity and mineral drive.— 97 Josh Raynolds

Normally a Zinfandel-dominated blend with a splash of Grenache and Mourvèdre, the 2018 Downstream comes from a collaboration between two great winemakers, Justin Smith in Paso Robles and Philippe Cambie in the Southern Rhône. I’ve loved every vintage of this cuvée, and the 2018 is no exception, showing a more Rhône-like style in its darker berry fruits, bouquet garni, pepper, and flowery incense aromas and flavors. With full-bodied richness, a polished, elegant texture, ample tannins and structure, . This will stand toe to toe with any top Châteauneuf du Pape out there.   It’s another full-bodied, powerful yet elegant wine from this incredible team of Philippe Cambie and Justin Smith.   JD 98

2017 Downstream

Highly perfumed, mineral-accented blackberry and cherry preserve aromas are complemented by incense, licorice and pungent floral notes. Supple, sweet and impressively concentrated, offering palate-staining black/blue fruit, spice-cake, cola and lavender pastille flavors that are braced by a spice of juicy acidity. Plush yet surprisingly lively for its heft, showing a suave floral note and superb clarity on the strikingly long, youthfully tannic finish. — Josh Raynolds 96

The 2017 Downstream is slightly less Zinfandel-dominated and checks in as 66% Zinfandel, 15% Mataró, and the rest Grenache, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Tempranillo, and Viognier, a large portion of which comes from the Paderewski Vineyard. It’s a darker, smoky wine that has stunning notes of cassis, blood orange, smoke herbs, and ground pepper. Layered and multi-dimensional on the palate, with silky tannins, give bottles a year or so and enjoy over the following decade or more. 97 + JD

2016 Downstream

Opaque, bright-rimmed ruby. Potent, highly expressive black and blue fruit, potpourri and exotic spice aromas show outstanding clarity and pick up candied licorice, cola and black tea qualities with air. Silky, seamless and alluringly sweet, offering palate-staining boysenberry, cassis, bitter chocolate and violet pastille flavors that deliver a huge payload of flavor but come off surprisingly lively as well. The floral and blue fruit qualities carry emphatically through a strikingly long, smooth finish framed by supple, steadily building tannins. — Josh Raynolds 95

Thrilling notes of black raspberries, spice box, white pepper, and crushed flowers all emerge from the glass, and it’s full-bodied and concentrated, yet as seamless, silky, and polished as they come. The 2016 is 76% Zinfandel, 8% Syrah, 6% Mataró, 6% Petite Sirah, and the rest Tempranillo, brought up in a mix of vessels. Count yourself lucky if you have a bottle or two!  98 JD
