“One who is igniting Schiava’s full potential is Hartmann Donà, a stern-looking man with a fascination for the variety bordering on insanity. Last year Donà released three single-vineyard Schiavas grown on radically different soil types: Phyllit from gneiss, Dolomit from calcareous sediments; and Granit grown on soils of volcanic origin. Rarely have I been more excited about red wines from Alto Adige. Vinified in pretty much the same way, while stylistically completely different, they are crystal-clear expressions of Alto Adige’s complex terroirs.
