Young Jessica Pellegrini has taken over the family vineyards and is now producing some lovely, elegant wines from her small plot in the great cru of Montosoli- in northern Montalcino. With only 1.5 hectares for Rosso and just .05 hectare for Brunello- production is very limited. Vines are farmed organically and in the cantina Jessica is a minimalist: only native yeast, fermentation and malo are both based on the temperature of the season, and the wines are aged in large neutral 900 gallon casks. Jessica is a one woman show, since the passing of her brother, she does both the vineyard and the cellar work. The horse on the label depicts Jessica’s other great love- her horses.
2013 Brunello di Montalcino
Good medium ruby. Sexy, super-ripe aromas and flavors of crystallized red cherry, blackberry liqueur and figs. Plush, pliant and perfumed; not the last word in complexity but creamy and delicious already. The juicy finishing flavors of black cherry and licorice convey an almost candied ripeness. Finishes very long, with serious, broad tannins.
